October 2024 Class Action Settlements

Deadlines are quickly approaching, so act fast.

$4.89M PeopleFinders Class Action Settlement

Confi-Check agreed to pay $4.89 million to resolve a class action lawsuit claiming it violated Illinois law by using customer information without consent.

The settlement benefits Illinois residents whose name PeopleFinders displayed on its website and users clicked on between Nov. 2, 2021, and Jan. 1, 2023.

According to the class action lawsuit, Confi-Chek used consumer information for advertising purposes on the PeopleFinders website. Confi-Check allegedly used this information without consent, violating Illinois’ Right of Publicity Act.

The deadline to file a claim with the settlement is Oct. 7, 2024.

$5.085M U-Haul Data Breach Class Action Settlement

A $5.085 million data breach settlement with U-Haul resolves claims it failed to protect consumers from two cyberattacks in 2022 and 2023.

The settlement benefits California residents whose information the U-Haul data breaches compromised in September 2022 and December 2023.

Plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit claim U-Haul’s subpar cybersecurity failed to prevent data breaches in 2022 and 2023. During these cyberattacks, hackers allegedly stole consumer names and driver’s license numbers.

The deadline to file a claim with the settlement is Oct. 15, 2024.

$4.76M Group 1001 Data Breach Class Action Settlement

Group 1001 agreed to pay $4.76 million to resolve claims a 2023 data breach compromised consumer information.

The settlement benefits Group 1001 customers, employees, dependants, payees and others whose information the 2023 data breach compromised.

According to the data breach class action lawsuit, hackers gained access to sensitive consumer information in a February 2023 cyberattack. Group 1001 allegedly could have prevented the breach by implementing reasonable cybersecurity measures.

The deadline to file a claim with the settlement is Oct. 10, 2024.

$115M Oracle Privacy Class Action Settlement

A $115 million settlement with Oracle resolves claims it shared consumer information with third parties for advertising purposes.

The settlement benefits individuals whose personal information Oracle collected or shared through ID Graph, Data Marketplace or another Oracle advertising product since Aug. 19, 2018.

Plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit claim Oracle collected personal information on consumers, which it then sold through its various advertising products. Consumers claim they never consented to having their information sold in this manner.

The deadline to file a claim with the settlement is Oct. 17, 2024.

$9M BuzzFeed VPPA Class Action Settlement

BuzzFeed agreed to pay $9 million to resolve claims it shared user web information without consent in violation of federal law.

The settlement benefits BuzzFeed account holders and newsletter subscribers who accessed a video through a Buzzfeed website between May 16, 2021, and Nov. 10, 2023.

According to the complaint, BuzzFeed collected user information and shared it with Facebook without obtaining consent. Users affected by this issue argue that Oracle’s actions violated the Federal Video Privacy Protection Act.

The deadline to file a claim with the settlement varies depending on the dates included in emailed settlement notices, which could range from Oct. 1-Nov. 5, 2024.

$3.25M See Tickets Data Breach Class Action Settlement

See Tickets agreed to pay $3.25 million to resolve claims it failed to implement cybersecurity measures that could have prevented a 2023 data breach.

The settlement benefits consumers whose personal information the September 2023 See Tickets data breach compromised. 

Plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit claim See Tickets could have prevented a September 2023 data breach by implementing reasonable cybersecurity measures. This cyberattack allegedly compromised payment card information and other data.

The deadline to file a claim with the settlement is Oct. 20, 2024.

Joy Cone Data Breach Class Action Settlement

A Joy Cone settlement resolves claims a 2023 cyberattack against the ice cream cone brand compromised employee information.

The settlement benefits individuals the Joy Cone data breach affected in February 2023.

According to the data breach class action lawsuit, the 2023 attack compromised names, Social Security Numbers and other sensitive employee information. Plaintiffs in the case argue Joy Cone could have prevented the data breach by implementing reasonable cybersecurity measures. 

The deadline to file a claim with the settlement is Oct. 23, 2024.

Mazda Valve Stem Class Action Settlement

Mazda agreed to a class action settlement to resolve claims it equipped some of its vehicles with defective valve stem seals, causing excessive oil consumption.

The settlement benefits current and former owners and lessees of 2021-2022 Mazda CX-30, 2021 CX-5, 2021 CX-9, 2021-2022 Mazda3 and 2021 Mazda6 vehicles equipped with affected valve stem seals.

Drivers in the case claim Mazda failed to warn them their vehicles contained faulty valve stem seals that lead to excessive oil consumption. As a result of this defect, they allegedly paid for costly oil refills and more frequent oil changes.

The deadline to file a claim with the settlement is Oct. 19, 2024.

Clearview AI Class Action Settlement

A Clearview AI settlement resolved claims the company collected and stored consumer biometric information in its databases without consent.

The settlement benefits individuals whose facial images and/or biometric data Clearview AI stored in its biometric database, along with several statewide subclasses in California, Illinois, New York and Virginia.

According to the class action lawsuit, consumers never consented to have their biometric information collected from public websites, such as Facebook. Clearview AI allegedly added this data to its facial recognition biometric database, which it then sold access to without consumer consent.

The deadline to file a claim with the settlement is Oct. 25, 2024.

Hot Topic False Sale Class Action Settlement

Hot Topic agreed to a class action lawsuit to resolve claims it advertised items with misleading discounts.

The settlement benefits California residents who purchased one or more products on Hot Topic’s website between March 15, 2019, and July 29, 2024, and Oregon residents who purchased one or more products on Hot Topic’s website between Aug. 25, 2022, and July 29, 2024.

Plaintiffs in the false advertising class action lawsuit claim Hot Topic’s advertised discounts misled them. These discounts allegedly did not reflect any true sales or savings on purchased items and therefore violated California and Oregon state laws.

The deadline to file a claim with the settlement is Oct. 27, 2024.
