July 2024 Class Action Settlements Involve Star Tribune Media, Seresto, and Kia & Hyundai

In July, class action lawsuit settlements are accepting claims for various consumer issues such as data breaches, privacy violations, defective products and more.

Planet Nissan data breach class action settlement

Planet Nissan agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it failed to protect around 1,000 consumers from a 2022 data breach.

The settlement benefits Plant Nissan customers who received a data breach notice from Planet Nissan informing them their information may have been compromised by a data breach.

Plaintiffs in the data breach class action lawsuit claim hackers gained access to Planet Nissan’s systems in June 2022. According to the class action lawsuit, Planet Nissan could have prevented the data breach by implementing reasonable cybersecurity measures.

The deadline to submit a claim in the settlement is July 1, 2024.

Star Tribune Media VPPA $2.9M class action settlement

Star Tribune Media Co. agreed to pay $2.9 million to resolve claims it violated privacy laws by sharing subscriber information with Facebook.

The settlement benefits Star Tribune subscribers and viewers who viewed videos on Star Tribune’s website between July 7, 2020, and Feb. 5, 2024.

According to the class action lawsuit, Star Tribune disclosed user activity to Facebook through a Meta Pixel tracker embedded in its website. Plaintiffs in the case argue this tracking violated the Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA).

The deadline to submit a claim in the settlement is July 5, 2024.

Planned Parenthood Los Angeles data breach $6M class action settlement

Planned Parenthood LA (PPLA) agreed to pay $6 million to resolve claims it failed to protect patients from a 2021 data breach.

The settlement benefits consumers who received a PPLA data breach notification in November 2021 informing them their information may have been compromised in an October 2021 data breach.

The PPLA data breach allegedly compromised patient names, insurance information and protected health data when hackers stole the information of more than 400,000 patients. According to the plaintiffs, PPLA failed to protect their information through reasonable cybersecurity measures.

The deadline to submit a claim in the settlement is July 6, 2024.

Kia, Hyundai engine failure class action settlement

Hyundai and Kia drivers could benefit from a class action lawsuit settlement resolving claims the car brands concealed serious engine defects that can cause vehicle failure.

The settlement benefits owners and lessees of certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles.

According to the engine defect class action lawsuit, some Hyundai and Kia vehicles have defective connecting rod bearings. Plaintiffs claim that, when this bearing fails prematurely, the vehicle engines can seize, stall, fail or even catch fire.

The deadline to submit a claim with the settlement is July 8, 2024.

Discover Bank DACA loans $975K class action settlement

Discover agreed to pay $975,000 to resolve claims it discriminated against Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients when providing loans to borrowers.

The settlement benefits DACA recipients who applied for a Discover student loan, personal loan or home loan between July 22, 2018, and Feb. 29, 2024, and who were declined credit or only received credit after meeting the requirement to have a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident as a cosigner.

Plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit claim Discover discriminated against DACA recipients by imposing “unequal conditions” on their loan applications. 

The deadline to submit a claim with the settlement is July 11, 2024.

Suave benzene contamination $2M class action settlement

Unilever agreed to pay $2 million to resolve claims Suave spray deodorant was contaminated with benzene.

The settlement benefits consumers who purchased Suave 24-Hour Protection Powder Aerosol Antiperspirant and/or Suave 24-Hour Protection Fresh Aerosol Antiperspirant between Jan. 1, 2018, and March 7, 2024.

Plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit claim Suave spray deodorants, which Unilever recalled in March 2022, contained benzene. Benzene is a known human carcinogen that has been linked to leukemia and other serious health problems. 

The deadline to submit a claim with the settlement is July 15, 2024.

Seresto flea, tick collars $15M class action lawsuit settlement

Elanco and Bayer agreed to pay $15 million to resolve claims Seresto flea and tick collars could kill animals.

The settlement benefits consumers who purchased any Seresto product before July 8, 2024.

According to the class action lawsuit, Seresto flea and tick collars can cause neurological problems and, in some cases, these collars allegedly cause death. Plaintiffs in the case claim  Elanco and Bayer falsely advertised the collars as safe and effective.

The deadline to submit a claim with the settlement is July 23, 2024.

Connexin Software data breach class action settlement

Connexin Software agreed to pay $4 million to resolve a class action lawsuit claiming it failed to prevent a 2022 data breach. 

The settlement benefits individuals affected by the August 2022 Connexin Software data breach.

Plaintiffs in the data breach class action lawsuit argue Connexin Software should have protected consumers from the breach, which allegedly compromised Social Security numbers, health insurance data, employment information and other data of around 3 million individuals.

The deadline to submit a claim with the settlement is July 25, 2024.

New York Lyft driver sales tax, fees $38M attorney general settlement

New York Attorney General Letitia James reached a $38 million settlement with Lyft to resolve claims the rideshare company deducted sales tax and fees from driver wages.

The settlement benefits Lyft drivers who provided rides in New York between Oct. 11, 2015, and July 31, 2017, and whom New York sales tax and Black Car Fund fee deductions reduced their pay.

James filed a lawsuit against Lyft, arguing the rideshare company violated New York law by deducting sales tax and other fees from driver wages instead of having passengers pay these expenses. According to the attorney general lawsuit, Lyft also denied drivers the benefits they were entitled to under New York labor laws.

The deadline to submit a claim with the settlement is July 29, 2024.
