That’s right, Penny Hoarders! Three years ago, a multimillionaire named Forest Fenn buried a chest (weighing over 40 pounds!) that is filled with a multi-million dollar treasure. It’s filled with gold coins, diamonds, emeralds and other gems, and it’s yours for the taking.

A self-professed hunter of rare artifacts, Fenn has honed the craft of the treasure hunt for seven decades. He’s fed up with Americans who sit around and watch TV or play video games all day, and he finally decided to do something about it when he had the idea to bury his treasure for another to find. Born out of his desire to pass along the “thrill of the chase” and to get more people to fall in love with the natural beauty and trails around them, Fenn buried the treasure in hopes of sparking a more active, interested subset of our culture.

In case there were any naysayers, when interviewed on the Today Show, Fenn revealed a 10th clue, stating the treasure was settled somewhere above an altitude of 5,000 feet.
From Air Force to Artifact Curator
Forest Fenn has lived quite a life, which may be why his treasure hunt has sparked the curiosity and interest of millions of people since he first put word out about what he buried. In lieu of college, Fenn entered the Air Force after graduating high school, where he served as a decorated pilot until his retirement in the 1970s. But even as his war missions and various deployments continued to take up more of his time and efforts, Fenn remained an avid collector of rare artifacts. Upon retiring from the service, Fenn amassed his fortune through his lifelong hobby of treasure hunting and artifact finding. Over the years, Fenn grew to be a top art dealer with clients such as Ralph Lauren frequenting his store.
A surprise cancer diagnosis in 1988 caused Fenn to consider his legacy and thus the plan of burying his treasure was born. Fortunately, Fenn has survived far beyond his initial prognosis, and he continues to enjoy the 7,500+ emails he has received regarding his most famous treasure hunt to date.
