Retail stores have good times and bad, but not everyone comes out on top amid financial struggles. That means retail store closures are coming in 2025. Here are some well-known retailers that are closing a decent chunk of their locations next year.

1.Walgreens

Walgreens’ financial trouble has led it to announce the closure of 1,200 stores. It’s expected to close 500 locations in the 2025 fiscal year, and the total closures will amount to 1,200 by the end of 2027. Primarily, the stores that will go under are what Walgreens calls “underperformers,” and Walgreens CEO Time Wentworth said the company will have a “healthier store base” as a result of the changes.

2. BuyBuy Baby

BuyBuy Baby has had money troubles in the past. In 2023, its intellectual property was sold off to a New Jersey-based company called Dream on Me for $15.5 million. The 120 stores that made up the company’s portfolio did not go with that sale, and they were left empty.

In November 2024, BuyBuy Baby bought back 11 brick-and-mortar stores, but it has decided to abandon that option to turn into a digital-first brand instead.

3. Advanced Auto Parts

Getting items for your vehicle is going to get a little tougher in the New Year. Advanced Auto Parts said it will close 727 locations by mid-2025. “This action is prudent to support the long-term health of the company,” said the company’s CEO, Shane O’Kelly.

As of the end of 2024, Advanced Auto Parts has over 4,700 stores, so the company will still be around. However, your options will become more limited.

4. Macy’s

As a part of an ongoing effort to improve revenue and keep the company moving forward, Macy’s announced it will close 150 stores through 2026. It also reported it would close approximately 50 stores by the end of fiscal year 2024 — a number that has now grown to 55. When asked about the accelerated timeline and how they feel the closures are going, Macy’s chief financial officer Adrian Mitchell said, “The punchline here is we’re very pleased with the traction and progress.”

5. Family Dollar

Almost everyone is familiar with Family Dollar because these shops have popped up all over the country. However, while it’s synonymous with convenience items, it isn’t convenient enough to avoid trouble. The company announced it would close 600 of its discount stores in March 2024. Another 370 stores are reportedly going to be shuttered in 2025.

Why so much trouble for a company that once flourished? A couple of factors, including reduced SNAP benefits in low-income communities and small margins, had an impact.

6. CVS

It’s almost impossible to imagine a community without a CVS, but it makes our list of future retail store closures. CVS has been adjusting its approach in the hopes of building up its health care services. Part of that approach is shutting some select stores that aren’t as profitable as the company would like. After those roughly 300 stores are shuttered, the company plans to invest in its MinuteClinic team and network. It will bring primary health care services, such as vaccines and treatments for the cold and flu, to communities around the country.

Keep an Eye Out for Retail Store Closures Near You

The good news about these retail store closures is they’re not signaling the end of these brands. While some may be going digital and shuttering their brick-and-mortar locations, many of them are closing stores that aren’t bringing in revenue or are losing money. The hope is these retailers will be better off by cutting back and getting back in the green so they can continue to operate and bring you the items you want to buy.
